New kid on the block

A neighbor received the first issue of The Farmington Press in his mailbox - for some reason, they and Suburban Lifestyles don’t deliver to apartment buildings - and it is impressive.

Published by Warren-based C&G Newspapers (you don’t suppose former Hills Chief Dwyer… nah), the paper comes in a tabloid style jammed with Farmington/Farmington Hills news. As a publicist, I’ve dealt with C&G publications and was surprised to see them branch out this far west. Still, in this economy, it makes some sense to enlarge one’s pool of potential advertisers. And the larger the circulation, the higher the ad rates.

In the Press’ first two issues, the print job and design look crisp and clean. Coverage seems even-handed, but feature-heavy, which seems prudent early in the game.

Overall, I give it high marks, although I’m not crazy about the name. C&G has named papers “Sentry” and “Sentinel” and “Chronicle” and “Post” and my favorite, “Woodward Talk.” I guess I wanted a little more… pizzaz. And now our “local” community newspapers are based in Livonia, Hamtrack and Warren. Any further out, we’ll start seeing reporters from Canada…
