A missive from Mark Steckloff and the camp of Democratic candidate Vicki Barnett, who didn’t have a primary in the House District 37 race, points out these calculations: “After months of heavy campaigning on the Republican side and spending nearly $50,000 among them, Vicki’s total vote was greater than all three
Republican state house candidates in Farmington Hills and nearly the same as all three in Farmington and Farmington Hills together! This despite much fewer primary contests on the Democratic side and a
disproportionately high turnout in Farmington because of the streetscape proposal.”
Mark (Vicki’s husband) also predicts many who voted for Republican challengers Richard Lerner and Michael Peters will not feel compelled to support Paul Welday in November. He believes Barnett will have greater appeal with moderate Republicans and independents. Seems logical, as Mr. Welday remains firmly entrenched in the party – and lots of folks seem disillusioned with partisanship. The fact that he’s a lobbyist and obliged to an enormous list of Political Action Committees (he reported three new PAC contributions August 1) will work against him, even among some Republicans.
Combine all that with “Vicki’s obvious appeal to independents and moderate Republicans, and the much higher Farmington Hills vote totals in November, and it’s quite evident why Barnett supporters are thrilled at the primary results and their prospects in November,” he wrote.
Let the games begin…
