Former Hills councilman in the news

This morning’s Free Press brought word that former Farmington Hills city councilman Robert Mason, ousted by newcomer Michael Bridges last August, has taken on a fairly daunting task.

Mr. Mason has been appointed by the state’s Local Emergency Financial Assistance Loan Board to step in as emergency financial manager for Highland Park, filling out the last two weeks of a four-year contract. He was appointed in the wake of allegations that the original appointee, Arthur Blackwell II, made improper payments to himself, in the amount of $264,000. Mr. Blackwell disputes all but $66,000, according to the report, which he says has been repaid.

Mr. Mason served with distinction, albeit for a brief period of time. He was appointed in January 2008 to fill a vacancy created when Councilman Jerry Ellis was elected Mayor in 2007.  Mason’s credentials made him the unanimous choice among the 10 who applied to fill Ellis’ seat. A number of people, including yours truly, were a little stunned to see him defeated in the special election. It’s nice to see his talents being put to good use.
